Meet Katie Cole originally from Melbourne, Australia, now based in Los Angeles, USA. If you were to talk about artists such as Jackson Browne, Glen Campbell and Kris Kristofferson, you’d expect to see them listed as influences for an artist hoping to make their name as a songsmith with more hooks than Muhammed Ali and a musical attention to detail that is second to none. So how does an up and coming artist like Cole manage to appear as a guest vocalist on Campbell’s final studio album, Ghost on the Canvas, and enlist Kristofferson to appear her own upcoming full length,Lay It All Down? Because she’s not just hoping to make a name for herself and songwriting prowess, she’s already done it and has enlisted some very talented friends along the way!
Growing up on a strict diet of rock music from her Mom, she was fed Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin in one ear and Maria Callas from her vocally classically trained, Father. After a quick detour in music to Smashing Pumpkins, Aretha Franklin and Eurythmics, Katie describes her own style of music as having flavors of Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac and Brandi Carlile. After writing songs for established artists like Gloria Gaynor, Katie spent a good handful of years touring in Australia but was soon to be propelled forward. Acclaimed Record Producer Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins, Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow, Ok Go) found her music on the web and reached out to Katie to discuss working together. She jumped on a few planes back and forth before realising that stateside was where she wanted to be, whether in the industry buzz of LA or the cultural spur of Nashville. With 2 suitcases, a computer and her guitar, Katie upped and re-located to Cali for good.
What followed was a string of locals awards, TV placements for her music and an illustrious award from Movado watches coupled with a national US national television ad campaign. Cole, then picked up further momentum with her last EP “Lost Inside a Moment” gaining some unexpected but welcomed support from the UK. Cole had 2 songs play-listed on BBC Radio 2, with other songs played and was also interviewed on Aled Jones’s Good Morning Sunday. Luck would have it, the1st single “I Can’t Wait” from the upcoming new album also gained several plays on BBC Radio 2. Katie is taking it all in stride touring both the UK and America. Most recently Katie has performed at festivals including SXSW, Sundance, Namm, ASCAP expo and several show for Pinktober (breast cancer awareness month) at various Hard Rock Cafes throughout America.
Now the incredible new single, paired with a brilliant video is sure to create just as many sparks. “(We Started a) Fire” is reminiscent of KT Tunstall and Sheryl Crow. American Country meets British Pop.
