Valerie Forgione returns with her project Lovina Falls and a new song called “Light and Low”, released on Friday, June 13. The track blends electronic elements with harpsichord and steady rhythm. Later that night, Lovina Falls will play at Deep Cuts in Medford with The Daylilies and RoseR.

The song explores moving through change and letting go of old ideas. Forgione says: “‘Light and Low’ is about recognizing that as time goes on, it’s ok to let go of old and ‘historic thinking’ to create a new path through and out of the Thicket of Now. It’s about knowing that when things change, the path is not predestined. Change the change. Move with conviction, but head gracefully into the unknown, light and low.”

Lovina Falls began in 2023 with the album Calculating the Angle of Our Descent, written and produced by Forgione. She plays piano, synths, guitar, bass, organ, and drums on the recordings. The project has drawn comparisons to Fiona Apple, Bat For Lashes, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Elastica.

Before Lovina Falls, Forgione was the lead singer of Mistle Thrush, a Boston band that played with The Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Spiritualized, Sonic Youth, Lush, and Slowdive. The band received local recognition and national press and appeared on television soundtracks.

In 2024, Lovina Falls became a live band. They performed in the Rock and Roll Rumble and opened for The Chameleons. A new album is scheduled for release in September 2025.

New Zealand-born, San Diego-base  artist Estella Dawn releases her version of The 1975’s “Somebody Else”.

This version builds on pulsing synths and steady percussion. Estella breaks the song down and rebuilds it through her own process.

Charlie McDonald returns with his second single, “Time”, following his debut, “You Broke Me.” The song was inspired by a personal moment when he found old photos of a friend who died in a car accident nine years ago. This discovery brought back feelings of loss and fading memories, which shaped the track’s emotional core.

At 26, Charlie lives between London and Paris. His music explores connection, loss, longing, and other complex feelings, using pop and R&B sounds to tell stories. His voice is quiet but strong, drawing listeners in with honest delivery.

I had just made a new friend who shared a lot of the same stuff as me, and for the first time I felt like talking about it took the weight away. It made me stop seeing it as something wrong with me. I brought the demo to Kaity Rae, and she helped shape it into what it is now. Songwriting is how I explain myself. I hope people hear this and feel understood.”
