SoCal based The Brevet are quietly flying under the radar with their version of indie rock. They nicely blend folk, country, and alt rock like indie rock icons Kings of Leon. Their collection of tunes are not built for pop radio, but for the stage. Hence, the band is finding their entry point by performing tons of shows and festivals. Aside from playing shows, the band has found success with tracks landing on 90210 and American Idol, and most recently a placement with Apple. Check out the track Locked and Loaded and give it a stream.

Cape Cub, a UK alternative pop-rock band released the track Moonglow. It’s safe and has a radio ready chorus with proper a bridge and chants. If they can pump out more quality tracks like this gem, then maybe they have something.  Beginning as a solo project of lead singer Chad Male quickly turned into a full fledge band that has toured the club circuit with The Temper Trap and We Are Scientists across the UK. But the band wishes to graduate from clubs to arenas. Singer Chad notes, “Musically, and I swear this is without immodesty, we take our cues from the arenas. We’re unashamed of saying some of our biggest influences are the ones we grew up listening to like The Killers, U2, Springsteen, The Eagles, Kate Bush, Death Cab For Cutie and The Cure. Of course,  alternative acts can rarely stack an arena with an audience but Cape Cub can move ahead of their indie peers . Chad opens up about songwriting – “But you know, we’re also unashamed of saying that, when it comes to songwriting and production, we’re as into pop and new music as the next person. We love huge choruses, sweet synth lines, electronic production and hooks that could catch a thief in a bank robbery. Give the latest track a click!

The powers that be are accessing this years MTV Video Music Awards after hitting another ratings low. Only 5 million viewers decided to tune in. To save face, the network is painting an upswing in social media activity. Still, the show didn’t move sales and streaming numbers for the artists, and that’s what labels and managers hope for. Money is spent and a return is expected. Plus, putting on the show is a hefty cost. One could very well assume that this could be the last MTV awards show. The fat lady may have sung. If MTV thought they had impact on popular culture, the confidence is gone. It’s a new era.

“Because in this bottom-up world, where cultural authority shatters into a million channels of exposure, the hits are harder to foresee—and authority is harder to protect.” – Derek Thompson

If anything, the MTV network looks cursed. Madonna was hired to pay tribute to Aretha Franklin and received the biggest backlash of her career. Post Malone left in a plane that blew two tires and had to make emergency landing, while twitter followers were hoping for his death. In fact, some of the biggest pop stars skipped the ceremony. The Washington Post said Camila Cabello, who was the surprise winner of both Artist of the Year and Video of the Year, was MTV’s way of sending a message to celebrities who don’t show up that they would be ‘punished’ for not showing up at the awards and ‘rewarded’ for attending.

It’s back to the boardroom.
