Both Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry are back with new music. Miley dropped the first of three six-song EPs while Katy Perry released a Ariana-Grande style single “Never Really Over.” Perry is aiming for the radio charts and Miley is taking chances again. In fact, Miley hasn’t made a radio album since Bangerz which was released 2013. There has been a lot of talk if Miley and Katy can still move tracks and and sell tickets. While Miley and Katy focused on outside endeavors new pop stars dominated like Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Cardi B, and Billie Eilish.

Most pop stars rarely last more than 5 years, nobody survives the changing trends. That still doesn’t mean business is over. They can still generate lots of money, even though they can’t pack the same size venues. When the pop stars of yore like Katy and Miley discover the fact they will no longer be trending topics, they will actually start writing great music again – the type of songs that broke them in the first place. Creativity is the highest when their are no strings attached.

Three piece pop act Public releases a fantastic tune called Honest. The haunting pop track which is reminiscent of Echosmith’s Cool Kid was mixed by Paul David Hagar (Miley Cyrus, Beck) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Sia, Foo Fighters). The band tells Kings, “This song is about struggling to come to terms with the realization that something that’s been craved for so long is now completely out of reach. The driving pressure of the bass-line and hi-hat, the dark, foreboding slide guitar, the haunting vocal melodies tinged with jealousy – all make up one last, desperate effort to bring back what’s already gone.” While the track 4Her which came off their 2017 EP recently clocked over a million Spotify streams, the band will head out on tour with The Driver Era fronted by popular actor and musician Ross Lynch.

Miley Cyrus ran around on Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards nearly naked, and then flashing her nipple during a costume change.

As the camera panned backstage, Miley failed to cover up and the broadcast quickly cut away to the crowd while she continued to talk. She then said, “What’s happening? Oh, sorry.”

Throughout the show, she sang about smoking marijuana and during the final performance of the show – ok, lets stop here. The fact is, Miley and MTV are desperately looking for a scandal that will make Monday morning news.

It’s no secret that MTV is trying to reinvent itself to combat sinking ratings and disinterested teens. MTV primetime programming is reaching 40% fewer viewers in the 12-to-34 target demo than it did five years ago, according to Nielsen.

MTV hasn’t a big hit show in quiet some time. Interest in MTV’s reality shows that came to dominate MTV’s schedule is fading, and, at 23, The Real World is older than its target audience. “Big shows are once in a few years for any network,” says John Janedis, equity analyst at Jefferies. “It’s becoming harder to have smash hits.”

“It’s the perfect storm,” says a former MTV programming executive. “The audience is going digital, reality TV is running dry, there’s more competition for scripted programs. I feel for the executives there.”
